British Olympic sprinter CJ Ujah has denied any role in an alleged cryptocurrency fraud case. The athlete appeared before Chelmsford Crown Court with nine other people who are accused of being part of a group linked to a crypto scam. The case is still in court, and none of the allegations have been proven yet.

Ujah, whose full name is Chijindu Ujah, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to defraud. Eight other defendants also pleaded not guilty, while another defendant, Joseph Umoru, will enter a plea at a later hearing. The court fixed the next hearing for September 9. A 12-week trial will begin on May 24, 2027.

    Police Outline Alleged Crypto Scam

Police have revealed that the group used fake phone calls to target people who owned cryptocurrency. The callers allegedly claimed they worked for the police or for cryptocurrency companies. They convinced victims to share important security details connected to their crypto wallets.

After getting those details, the fraudsters allegedly entered the victims’ wallets and stole their digital assets. Investigators said one victim lost more than £300,000 in the scam. Authorities believe the same method may have affected several other victims.

    Investigation and Court Proceedings

The Eastern Region Special Operations Unit led the investigation. Officers carried out search operations across Kent, Essex, and London on April 29 as part of the inquiry into the alleged cryptocurrency crime.

CJ Ujah is one of Britain’s best-known sprinters. He competed at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He also helped Great Britain win the men’s 4×100 meter relay at the 2017 World Championships. Earlier in his career, he became the fifth British athlete to run the 100 meters in less than 10 seconds.

    Ujah’s Athletics Career

Ujah also faced a doping case allegation after the Tokyo Olympics, which led to Britain losing its relay silver medal. Officials later cleared him of intentionally taking banned substances. His latest court appearance relates only to the alleged crypto fraud case, which will now continue through the legal process.
