India’s crypto market is showing signs of a shift as wealthy investors move beyond short-term trading. BitDelta India CEO Vikaas Sachdeva highlighted this trend on August 24, saying HNIs and family offices are starting small digital asset allocations.

The change is emerging across India as investors seek portfolio diversification instead of daily price gains. Sachdeva said clearer regulation, stronger investor education, and institutional participation could help crypto investing gain wider acceptance. He compared the current stage with mutual funds in 1995.

“Today, it’s small sums, with a little capital being allocated and held quietly,” Sachdeva said.

He added that disciplined, long-term crypto investing could become the next major chapter for India’s market. HNIs are approaching crypto with greater caution than typical retail traders.

Small allocations allow investors to test digital assets without exposing core wealth to extreme volatility. The approach also places crypto alongside traditional assets such as equities, gold, debt, and alternatives.

However, crypto regulation in India remains a major hurdle for larger allocations. India allows crypto ownership and trading, while taxation and anti-money laundering rules shape the current framework. The absence of a dedicated crypto law continues to create uncertainty for investors and institutions.

Tax costs also influence investor behavior. Crypto gains face a 30% tax, while a 1% TDS applies to most virtual digital asset transfers. The structure can make frequent trading less attractive and encourage longer holding periods.

Sachdeva also stressed the importance of education before wider adoption. HNIs need clear risk limits, secure custody, proper records, and defined portfolio allocations before increasing exposure.

The next phase could depend on institutional adoption and regulatory clarity. If both improve, India’s crypto market may gradually evolve into a structured investment segment.
