India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) could play an increasingly important role in connecting the country’s banking system with digital assets as cryptocurrency expands beyond investment into payments, stablecoins and tokenized finance.

The opportunity is not limited to increasing Bitcoin ownership. Easier movement between Indian rupees and digital assets could reduce friction for users while connecting blockchain-based financial services with India’s established payments infrastructure.

    Coinbase Plans Payment Upgrade

Coinbase India is preparing to improve its domestic payment rails, John O’Loghlen, Coinbase’s regional managing director, said in an interview with Livemint.

“We’re actually going to be announcing an upgrade to our payment rails in India soon,” O’Loghlen said.

While he did not explicitly identify UPI, he described the system involved as “one of the leading payment technologies in India, pioneered by the government”.

The upgrade would make it “very easy to move money in and out of your account,” according to O’Loghlen.

Coinbase India already allows customers to “cash out of your crypto into Indian rupees” and “top up to buy digital assets with Indian rupees”. Users can additionally transfer crypto from external exchanges or wallets, subject to applicable compliance requirements.

    Stablecoins Expand the Opportunity

Payment connectivity could become more important as stablecoins gain adoption.

“The practical use case for digital assets in the last 24 months has largely been around stablecoins,” O’Loghlen said.

He said stablecoins can facilitate transfers in a “real-time, low-cost” environment while allowing businesses to move money globally “atomically, programmatically”.

This creates a potential two-layer model: established payment infrastructure could facilitate rupee movement, while blockchain networks enable digital-asset settlement.

    Tokenisation Could Broaden Usage

Tokenisation represents another potential growth area. Stocks, ETFs and other traditional financial instruments are increasingly being explored through blockchain-based infrastructure.

For India, combining efficient rupee payment rails with tokenized financial products could eventually expand digital-asset usage beyond cryptocurrency trading.

The key question is therefore shifting from simply how Indians purchase crypto to how efficiently regulated platforms can connect rupees with blockchain-based assets.

If Coinbase’s planned payment upgrade reduces deposit and withdrawal friction, India’s existing digital-payment infrastructure could become an increasingly important gateway connecting conventional finance with the developing digital-asset economy.
