Bitcoin recovered above USD 78,000 on Wednesday as cryptocurrencies followed US stock futures higher after Democrats secured control of Congress in the midterm elections. However, regulatory uncertainty and recent security breaches continued weighing on investor confidence.
Bitcoin and Altcoins Recover
CoinMarketCap reported that Bitcoin gained 1.97% to USD 78,484.40 after briefly touching a six-week low. Ethereum advanced 2.52% to USD 2,325.11, while Solana, Dogecoin and Cardano climbed between 1.6% and 2.2%.
Despite Wednesday’s recovery, Bitcoin remained approximately 41% below its October 2025 record. According to CoinMarketCap, total cryptocurrency market capitalization stood near USD 2.63 trillion.
Democratic Victory Reshapes Market Expectations
Democrats’ congressional victories initially triggered selling amid concerns about tighter cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence regulations. However, investors subsequently welcomed the prospect of political stability and reduced uncertainty surrounding election results.
The S&P 500 and NASDAQ 100 futures subsequently indicated gains of approximately 0.9%. Kristina Hooper, chief market strategist at Man Group, described the result as ‘a resounding blue sweep’ that could prevent significant challenges to the election outcome.
Crypto Outflows and Security Concerns Persist
Cryptocurrency markets have lost approximately USD 300 billion in capitalization over the past month. According to LSEG/Lipper, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded USD 215 million in October outflows, bringing year-to-date withdrawals to USD 1.84 billion.
The recent Binance security breach further weakened sentiment, with customers withdrawing a net USD 4.72 billion following the exchange’s reopening. HashKey researcher Tim Sun warned that security incidents were prompting investors to reconsider cryptocurrency custody risks.
AI Regulation Remains a Key Risk
Investors are also monitoring potential restrictions on AI infrastructure, particularly data centre development. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ 100 has fallen nearly 10% from its October peak, reflecting concerns about technology valuations.
Despite the recovery, cryptocurrency markets remain vulnerable to regulatory developments, institutional selling and cybersecurity risks. Upcoming congressional decisions could determine whether investor confidence strengthens or volatility persists.
