Hyderabad Widower Loses ₹86 Lakh in Crypto Investment Scam

He Was Looking for Love. He lost ₹86 Lakh instead.

Grief does something strange to a person. It makes you reach out, search for connection, and trust more easily than you normally would. For a 42-year-old widower in Hyderabad, that very human need became the opening that a group of fraudsters was waiting for. What started as hope ended as one of the most heartbreaking online investment scams in India anyone could imagine.

It Felt Real. That Was the Point.

After losing his wife, he joined a matrimony app in November 2025. Not long after, a profile named “Preeti Chopra” appeared. She was warm, attentive, and interesting. She also claimed to be a forex and bitcoin trader doing very well for herself.

Nobody joins a matrimony app expecting a financial trap. That is exactly why matrimony app scams in Hyderabad work so well. By the time money enters the conversation, the emotional connection already feels solid.

    Small Wins, Big Lies

“Preeti” eventually moved their chats to a private messaging app and began showing him screenshots of her crypto earnings. She walked him through registering on a trading website and suggested he try investing in USDT. He did. And his first return came back as ₹21,750 in profit.

That small win was not luck. It was bait. Every cryptocurrency fraud case that follows this pattern, known as pig butchering, uses early profits to kill doubt and build blind confidence.

    Then the Walls Closed In

Two months and several deposits later, he tried to withdraw his money. Suddenly, there were fees. Then taxes. Then upgrade charges. Every payment unlocked a new demand. By the end, ₹86 lakh had quietly left his account. This is how cryptocurrency fraud in India really works, not in one dramatic moment, but slowly, politely, and deliberately.

    The Aftermath

Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have filed a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act. But money lost in a Hyderabad crypto scam rarely comes back.

If someone online combines romance with investment advice, that is not a connection. That is a con. Trust your instincts and never let loneliness make financial decisions for you.
