The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has found that terror groups are using online platforms to recruit young people in India. Officials said these groups depend on cryptocurrency, encrypted apps, VPNs, and fake social media accounts to hide their activities and avoid security agencies.
The agency has revealed these findings after conducting raids at 20 locations across the country in July. The investigation uncovered a “three-app model” that terror groups allegedly use to contact, influence, and support new members.
How the Three-App Model Works?
According to the NIA, the process starts on public social media platforms such as Instagram. After making contact, handlers move the conversation to encrypted apps like Telegram, WhatsApp, or Viber. Inside private groups, recruits first receive ideological messages. Later, they are shown violent content and guided on terror-related activities.
Officials said some recruits were also asked to create fake identities, arrange weapons, and travel to Pakistan or Afghanistan for terror training under foreign handlers. Cryptocurrency is reportedly used to send money without depending on normal banking systems.
AI and Encrypted Tools Raise Concerns
The same method appeared during investigations in Tamil Nadu, Vijayawada, and Mangaluru. Officials also found that terror groups use AI tools, VPNs, and foreign digital networks to make tracking more difficult.
The NIA said online platforms have largely replaced face-to-face meetings for radicalization. Encrypted communication allows handlers to stay hidden while reaching more people in different locations.
NIA Strengthens Cyber Monitoring
To deal with this threat, the NIA has strengthened its cyber team. The agency monitors the dark web, tracks encrypted communication, and carries out digital forensic investigations. It also works closely with the Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing, and state police forces.
Officials added that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has blocked more than 9,845 web links carrying extremist content. Regular cyber monitoring continues as security agencies work to stop online terror recruitment and prevent the spread of extremist propaganda.
