An Allahabad High Court case highlights how QR codes and crypto wallets can feature in impersonation scams. In Karolyn v. State of U.P., decided September 15, the court denied habeas corpus relief to petitioners arrested after a June 30 raid on an alleged cyber-fraud call center in Lucknow. Police arrested 119 people. The proceeding concerned detention legality, not guilt.

    How the Alleged Scheme Worked

According to the investigation and court record, the operation primarily targeted foreign nationals. Victims allegedly encountered pop-ups impersonating Amazon, Microsoft and Netflix and were directed to toll-free numbers.

Investigators alleged that callers were told their accounts had been compromised. Calls were then transferred between teams, with people allegedly posing as FTC, FBI, US Treasury or court officials.

The operation allegedly used forged documents to increase pressure. Smaller demands were reportedly made through gift cards, while larger amounts were converted into cryptocurrency. Investigators said QR codes containing crypto-payment information were shared through WhatsApp, directing transfers toward digital wallets.

Warning Signs Before Scanning a QR Code

The US Federal Trade Commission warns that government agencies will not demand payment through cryptocurrency. The FTC says scammers frequently create urgency, claim accounts are at risk and direct victims toward crypto payments. In July 2026, it said reported losses involving bank transfers and cryptocurrency exceeded USD 4 billion during the previous year.

A QR code does not prove that a payment is legitimate. It can encode a wallet address directing cryptocurrency to a scammer-controlled destination.

Users should verify unexpected contact through official websites or published numbers. Threats of arrest, demands for secrecy and instructions to buy cryptocurrency are major warning signs.

    What Victims Should Do

Anyone who transferred funds should contact the exchange, wallet provider or bank and report fraud. Victims should preserve wallet addresses, transaction hashes, QR codes, screenshots, messages and phone numbers. In India, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal says online financial fraud can be reported through the 1930 helpline.

The Lucknow allegations remain part of the investigation and court record and have not been established at trial.
