Ethereum developers have delayed the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet following concerns about potential disruptions to existing smart contracts. The decision cancels the October 26 activation and a proposed increase to the network’s 200 million gas limit.
The Ethereum Foundation informed that developers agreed during an October 22 meeting to investigate compatibility issues associated with EIP-8037 before proceeding with further testing.
Glamsterdam Upgrade Faces Unexpected Delay
The Hoodi activation was scheduled for October 26 at 17:42:48 UTC, corresponding to epoch 132,352. Developers have removed the Amsterdam execution-layer and Gloas consensus-layer upgrades from the activation schedule.
The proposed 200 million gas limit increase has also been postponed. However, the decision does not affect previously processed Hoodi transactions or Ethereum mainnet operations.
Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet successfully activated Glamsterdam on October 6, meaning the latest delay applies specifically to Hoodi.
ChainSecurity Flags Smart Contract Compatibility Risks
According to ChainSecurity, EIP-8037 changes how Ethereum accounts for gas consumed when creating blockchain state, potentially affecting existing contract behavior. The security firm’s October 13 assessment identified concerns involving failed external calls and transaction retry mechanisms.
Under the proposed changes, certain contracts could continue executing after unsuccessful operations instead of reverting as expected. Reports identified 13 real-world examples of potentially affected contracts, although their identities remain undisclosed during responsible disclosure. The concerns also involve EIP-8038, which modifies gas costs associated with accessing existing blockchain state.
Node Operators Must Update Software
The Ethereum Foundation instructed Hoodi operators to replace client versions configured for the canceled activation. Updated releases include Lodestar v1.50.1, Besu 26.10.1 and Nethermind 2.2.1. Operators must verify execution and consensus clients before October 26 to avoid following incompatible network configurations.
Ethereum Mainnet Timeline Remains Uncertain
Developers previously discussed December 1, December 8, and December 9 as potential mainnet activation dates. However, none received final approval, and Ethereum has not announced a replacement Hoodi schedule.
Glamsterdam aims to improve scalability through proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists. The postponement prioritizes smart contract compatibility over deployment speed, while ETH holders require no immediate action.
