Jio Platforms, backed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has raised approximately USD 3.1 billion through India’s largest initial public offering (IPO). However, investment banks managing the transaction will receive comparatively modest fees despite the record fundraising and strong investor participation.

Jio IPO Bankers Receive Just 0.65% in Fees

According to regulatory filings, Jio Platforms will pay approximately Rs. 1.96 billion (USD 20.7 million) to 19 investment banks handling the offering. The combined fee represents roughly 0.65% of the IPO’s total value, considerably below the compensation associated with several earlier Indian listings.

Intense competition among investment banks has reduced advisory fees for major public offerings. Financial institutions increasingly accept smaller commissions to participate in prestigious transactions, strengthen their market rankings and secure future mandates.

How Jio’s Fees Compare with Previous IPOs

Jio’s fee arrangement highlights changing economics in India’s investment banking industry. Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 IPO, valued at Rs. 278 billion, generated approximately Rs. 4.9 billion in banking fees, equivalent to 1.76% of the offering.

Similarly, Paytm’s parent, One 97 Communications, paid approximately Rs. 3.2 billion for its Rs. 183 billion IPO in 2021, representing 1.75%. Food delivery company Swiggy distributed approximately Rs. 2.8 billion in fees for its Rs. 113 billion offering, equivalent to 2.48%.

More recently, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India’s approximately USD 2.4 billion IPO generated Rs. 1.9 billion in fees for 20 banks, representing roughly 0.8%. SBI Funds Management’s billion-dollar offering reportedly generated just Rs. 46.3 million in banking fees.

    Investor Demand Remains Strong

Despite lower banking commissions, demand for Jio shares remained substantial. According to BSE data, the IPO achieved full subscription within the first 100 minutes of bidding. By Friday, investors had submitted bids for nearly 22 times the shares available, reflecting significant interest in Ambani’s telecommunications and digital services business.

    Final Thoughts

Jio’s record offering demonstrates a widening gap between fundraising volumes and investment banking compensation. While investors have shown considerable enthusiasm, increasingly competitive fee structures suggest that prestigious IPO mandates may deliver reputational benefits rather than exceptional immediate profits for participating banks.
