Hackers have targeted several high-profile Indian X accounts in recent weeks, pushing crypto scams through trusted profiles. Former ambassador Navtej Sarna and journalist Tavleen Singh faced such attacks around August 2026. Attackers gained account access through phishing links, then used established followers to spread crypto investment messages.
The attacks mainly target accounts with large audiences, where familiar names can make suspicious crypto offers appear credible. Sarna’s account promoted a fake investment story around Independence Day, while Singh’s account shared similar content on August 11. Both cases used the @coach_hannahrae account in posts promoting crypto gains and a luxury car
Hackers often begin with a fake DM that asks recipients to vote in an online competition. Other attacks use emails claiming copyright violations or unusual account activity from X. The links lead to fake login pages that capture passwords and two-factor authentication codes.
Once attackers obtain those details, they change account credentials and remove the original owner. The compromised profile then publishes crypto promotions and sends similar messages to existing contacts.
Some attacks also involve SIM swapping or session hijacking, which can bypass common account protections. Session hijacking can let malware steal active login tokens without requesting another password.
ThePrint reported more Indian accounts falling into the same pattern, including accounts linked to commentators and retired officials.
X had planned an additional check for accounts posting crypto content for the first time. Former Head of Product Nikita Bier said the measure could ‘kill 99% of the incentive.’
Bier left the product leadership role in August, leaving questions about the feature’s current rollout.
Security experts recommend authenticator apps, passkeys or hardware keys instead of SMS based authentication. Users should also avoid login links received through unexpected DMs or emails
