Fake Sparrow Wallet Never Existed on iPhone, Lawsuit Says Apple Missed Warning Signs Before $1.8M Losses

Apple is facing a lawsuit after three iPhone users claimed they lost nearly $1.8 million in Bitcoin through a fake crypto wallet app on the App Store. The case has raised fresh questions about Apple App Store security and how fake financial apps get approved.

The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. According to the complaint, the users downloaded a fake version of Sparrow Wallet from the App Store. After moving their Bitcoin into the app, the money was allegedly sent to wallets controlled by scammers.

Users Claim Apple Failed to Stop Fake Crypto App

Court records say James Ramirez lost nearly $876,000 in Bitcoin. Christopher Ellis reportedly lost around $840,000, while Jalen Delgado allegedly lost close to $120,000. All three users are asking the court to recover their losses and award additional damages.

The lawsuit says Apple should have stopped the fake crypto app before it reached the App Store. It also points out that the real Sparrow Wallet has never offered an iPhone app. The official wallet is only available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, making the App Store version a fake from the beginning.

Apple Removes Fake Apps as Security Questions Grow

The complaint also says Apple has often described the App Store as a safe place to download apps. According to the filing, many people trust Apple’s review process before installing banking or crypto apps. The lawsuit also claims Sparrow Wallet creator Craig Raw had warned that fake versions of the wallet were appearing on Apple’s platform.

Apple said it has removed the fake Sparrow Wallet apps and closed the developer accounts linked to them. The company also encouraged users to report suspicious apps through its reporting system.

The case comes after several fake crypto apps appeared on the App Store over the past few years. The court’s decision could affect how Apple reviews crypto apps and improves App Store security in the future.
