Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 release has raised debate across the crypto industry over possible risks to smart contracts, wallets, and supporting infrastructure. While some experts warn that advanced AI could help attackers find weaknesses, others say operational security failures remain the greater threat.
Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5, its first Mythos-class artificial intelligence model available for general use. The June 9 launch has drawn attention from cryptocurrency developers and investors for the model’s advanced coding capabilities.
Some industry figures fear stronger AI tools could help attackers find weaknesses, although others question whether the threat to smart contracts is being overstated.
Fable 5 Raises Questions About Crypto Security
Anthropic presents Fable 5 as its most capable widely released model. It can handle long coding tasks, software development, research, visual analysis, and other complex work. The model also supports a context window of one million tokens, allowing it to process large amounts of information during one task.

Security concerns follow earlier tests involving Claude Mythos Preview. Through Project Glasswing, Anthropic and around 50 partners used the restricted model to examine important software projects. The company said the program found more than 10,000 flaws classified as high or critical severity.
Moonrock Capital founder Simon Dedic questioned whether public access could lower the skills and resources needed to find exploitable smart contract flaws. He warned that unaudited protocols could face greater exposure as automated security tools become more capable.
However, it is not yet clear whether Fable 5 can produce similar results against blockchain systems. Anthropic has not announced any direct cryptocurrency or smart contract features for the model.
Anthropic Adds Limits to Sensitive Requests
Anthropic has placed safety controls around Fable 5’s strongest abilities. When the system detects certain high-risk cybersecurity requests, it redirects them to Claude Opus 4.8, an older and less capable model.
The company said it tested these controls through internal reviews, red-team exercises, and external checks. Anthropic acknowledged that releasing a model with advanced cybersecurity knowledge carries risks. It said the restrictions aim to prevent users from applying those capabilities to harmful tasks.
Still, questions remain over whether determined users could bypass the controls. No safety system can guarantee that every harmful request will be identified. Anthropic said more than 95% of normal Fable 5 sessions proceed without the protective rerouting process.
Meanwhile, Claude Mythos 5 will remain limited to approved cybersecurity and infrastructure organizations. That version uses the same core model but operates with fewer restrictions in selected areas.
Experts Doubt a Wave of DeFi Exploits
Curve Finance co-founder Michael Egorov questioned claims that the release could lead to widespread attacks against decentralized finance. He noted that the software examined during Project Glasswing often contained millions of lines of code.
Smart contracts are usually much smaller, making it easier for auditors and existing tools to review the entire codebase. Egorov said, “I suspect we might not be having a wave of DeFi code hacks.”
However, he warned that attackers may focus on operational security instead. Possible targets include compromised multisignature wallets, stolen private keys, altered website components, browser extensions, and software supply chains.
Crypto Users Review Wallet and Protocol Risks
The debate has renewed calls for users to check token approvals and avoid unaudited applications. Hardware wallets can protect private keys, but they cannot prevent losses when users approve harmful transactions or interact with compromised websites.
Developers may also use stronger AI tools to find and repair flaws before attackers reach them. Therefore, the same coding abilities raising concern could support faster security reviews. For now, there is no public evidence that Fable 5 has exploited a blockchain protocol or caused a cryptocurrency theft.
