India’s equity markets face mounting pressure from foreign capital withdrawals, currency weakness, and shifting global investment preferences. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has identified sustained capital outflows as a major economic risk for 2027, despite relatively stable domestic fundamentals. Nifty 50 has declined 12.13% in 2026, while the BSE Sensex has lost 12.78%, reflecting weakening investor sentiment.
Foreign Investors Withdraw Billions From Indian Equities
During the IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Sitharaman spoke to CNBC and highlighted how market liquidity enables investors to withdraw funds rapidly. “Because of the ease of liquidity, ease of availability, people are even exiting easily,” she stated.
According to NSDL data, foreign portfolio investors have sold more than USD 33 billion in Indian equities during 2026. September witnessed USD 4.1 billion in foreign institutional withdrawals, reversing August’s USD 2.4 billion inflows, according to HSBC Mutual Fund.
Domestic institutional investors provided support, purchasing USD 8.1 billion in September. Meanwhile, equity mutual funds have maintained monthly net inflows since March 2021.
AI Investment Shifts Reshape Regional Markets
Global investors increasingly favor technology-heavy markets benefiting from artificial intelligence expansion. According to Goldman Sachs, India’s weighting in the MSCI Asia Pacific ex-Japan index has fallen from 19% to 10%.
Taiwan and South Korea now account for 29% and 22%, respectively. Sitharaman acknowledged these investment shifts but argued India would not be significantly ‘hurt’ by an AI bubble collapse because its exposure remains comparatively limited.
Rupee Weakness Tests RBI Reserves
Foreign selling, elevated crude prices and higher US Treasury yields have intensified pressure on the rupee. According to Reuters, the Reserve Bank of India deployed approximately USD 75 billion to USD 80 billion through dollar sales and swaps since June 8. Foreign exchange reserves declined to USD 734.6 billion by October 2, approximately USD 51 billion below September’s peak.
Market Outlook
HSBC Mutual Fund expects corporate earnings to influence recovery prospects. The Nifty 50 trades near 17 times forward earnings, approximately 13% below its five-year average. However, sustained foreign withdrawals and currency volatility could constrain market performance heading into 2027, despite continued domestic investment support and resilient economic fundamentals.
