Centralized exchanges offer easy access and support, while decentralized ones give users full control. This guide compares custody, security, fees and tax rules, and uses 2026 data to show why the DEX-to-CEX ratio reached a record 24% in July.

    Overview:

    • CEXs offer convenience, fiat access and support, while DEXs provide self-custody and permissionless trading.
    • DEX activity is growing, but CEXs still handle most crypto trading volume.
    • Indian traders must consider KYC, taxes, TDS and security risks on both platforms.

Crypto traders today can choose between two main types of trading venues. These are centralized exchanges and decentralized exchanges. Both let users buy and sell digital assets, but they handle custody, identity checks and risk in very different ways. Understanding this gap helps traders protect their funds and pick the right platform.

Fresh data shows how quickly the balance is moving. According to The Block, the DEX-to-CEX spot volume ratio closed July 2026 at a record 24%, up from 17% a year earlier. For most of 2024, the ratio stayed below 10%. This article explains how each model works, where they differ and what Indian traders should keep in mind.

    How Centralized Exchanges Work?

A centralized exchange, or CEX, is run by a company. Binance, Coinbase and Kraken are common examples. The company holds user funds, matches buy and sell orders and decides which tokens get listed.

Users sign up with an email address, complete KYC checks and deposit money. Most platforms accept bank transfers and cards, so buying crypto with local currency is simple.

Key strengths of a CEX include:

    • A beginner-friendly interface
    • Deep liquidity and tight price spreads
    • Customer support and account recovery
    • Direct fiat on-ramps

The main trade-off is trust. Users give up control of their private keys and rely on the platform to keep assets safe.

    How Decentralized Exchanges Work

A decentralized exchange, or DEX, runs on smart contracts instead of a company. Traders connect a self-custody wallet and swap tokens directly from it. Uniswap, PancakeSwap and Aerodrome are leading examples.

Most DEXs use automated market makers. Liquidity pools set prices, so no order book or middleman is needed. Uniswap said on September 13, 2026, that it processed over USD 70 billion in volume during the past month, citing DeFiLlama data.

New tokens also reach DEXs faster. A listing can go live within minutes, while a CEX may need weeks of compliance review.

    Key Differences at a Glance

The two models differ on several practical points:

    • Custody: A CEX holds your keys. On a DEX, you keep them.
    • Identity: A CEX requires KYC. A DEX usually needs only a wallet.
    • Listings: A CEX reviews each token. A DEX allows open, permissionless listing.
    • Fiat Support: A CEX accepts rupees and cards. Most DEXs handle crypto only.
    • Support: A CEX offers a help desk. DEX transactions are rarely reversible.
    • Costs: A CEX charges trading fees. A DEX charges pool fees plus network gas fees.

    Security and Custody Risks

Every model carries its own risks, and traders should weigh them carefully.

    Risks on Centralized Platforms

Pooled funds create one large target for hackers. WazirX suffered a major breach on July 18, 2024, which left its 16 million users unable to access their holdings. CoinDCX disclosed its own hack on July 19, 2025. Both cases show that registered platforms can still fail.

    Risks on Decentralized Platforms

DEX users face different threats. Smart contract bugs, fake tokens and phishing links can drain a wallet quickly. A lost seed phrase cannot be recovered, since no company holds a backup.

    What the Latest Data Shows

Volume figures explain why this debate matters now:

    • DEX spot volume fell about 26% in July 2026 to roughly USD 130.77 billion, its lowest level in nearly two years.
    • CEX spot volume dropped to about USD 670 billion, a 12-month low and well below its annual high of USD 2.23 trillion.
    • CoinGecko reported that DEX spot share rose from 6.9% in January 2024 to 13.6% in January 2026.
    • CEXs still processed nearly USD 80 trillion in spot and perpetual volume during 2025, per the same report.

Notably, the record ratio came mainly from weaker CEX activity rather than stronger DEX activity. The ratio and market share are also different measures, so readers should compare them carefully.

    What Indian Traders Should Know

India treats crypto as legal but not as legal tender. Gains face a flat 30% tax, and a 1% TDS applies on transactions. These duties apply to the trader on any platform.

All virtual digital asset service providers, including offshore exchanges serving Indian users, must register with FIU-IND. Registered Indian exchanges such as CoinDCX and ZebPay handle KYC and TDS on the user’s behalf. DEX users must track every trade and report the tax themselves. Keeping clean records is therefore essential.

    Final Words

Neither model is better for every user. A CEX suits beginners who want easy onboarding, rupee deposits and support. A DEX suits experienced users who want full control and quick access to new tokens.

Many traders now use both. They keep trading funds on a regulated exchange and move to a DEX for selected trades. Whichever route you choose, store large balances in a personal wallet, verify platform registration and track every taxable trade. Informed habits protect capital far better than any single platform choice.

    FAQs

         1. What is the main difference between a CEX and a DEX?

A CEX is run by a company that holds your funds and requires KYC. A DEX runs on smart contracts, lets you keep your own keys and usually needs only a wallet.

         2. Is a DEX safer than a CEX?

Neither is risk free. A CEX exposes users to platform hacks, as WazirX showed in 2024. A DEX removes that custody risk but adds smart contract bugs, phishing and unrecoverable seed phrase losses.

         3. What does the 24% DEX-to-CEX ratio mean?

It shows DEX spot volume equaled about 24% of CEX spot volume in July 2026, per The Block. It is a ratio, not market share, and it rose as CEX volume fell.

         4. Are DEX trades taxable in India?

Yes. India applies a flat 30% tax on crypto gains, and the rules cover any platform. DEX users must track trades and report income themselves, since no exchange deducts TDS for them.

          5. Can traders use both types of exchanges?

Yes. Many traders keep funds on a regulated CEX for fiat access and support, then use a DEX for new tokens. Always verify registration and store large balances in a personal wallet.
