Crypto systematic investment plans are gaining attention in India as exchanges adapt the familiar mutual fund SIP model to digital assets. Instead of investing a lump sum, investors make fixed cryptocurrency purchases at regular intervals, reducing dependence on choosing a single entry point.
How Crypto SIPs Work
A crypto SIP can automatically purchase assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, PAXG or XAUT daily, weekly or monthly, depending on the platform.
An investor allocating Rs. 1,000 monthly to Bitcoin, for example, buys different quantities as prices fluctuate. This creates rupee-cost averaging, although it neither guarantees profits nor protects investors against prolonged market declines.
Platforms including CoinDCX allow SIPs starting from Rs. 100. SunCrypto also allows investors to modify contribution amounts, change dates or pause recurring investments.
Bitcoin’s Volatility Tests SIP Investors
Bitcoin’s recent cycle demonstrates why recurring investment strategies have attracted interest. Bitcoin fell to around USD 17,600 during 2022 before eventually reaching a record above USD 126,000 on October 6, 2025. The market then reversed sharply.
Bitcoin began 2026 around USD 87,500 before falling to approximately USD 58,500 by June. By September 16, it had recovered to roughly USD 77,500, remaining considerably below its record.
For SIP investors, these fluctuations mean purchase prices can differ substantially depending on when contributions occur.
A simplified example illustrates the effect. An investor making 10 equal purchases while Bitcoin averages USD 110,000 would have an approximate USD 110,000 cost basis. Continuing another nine purchases around USD 70,000 could reduce the average toward USD 87,000.
Taxes Remain Important
Crypto SIPs do not receive mutual-fund tax treatment. According to the Income Tax Department, income from transferring virtual digital assets is generally taxed at 30% under Section 115BBH, plus applicable surcharge and cess. TDS provisions can also apply to qualifying VDA transfers. Investors therefore need to consider taxation alongside trading fees and volatility.
Final Thoughts
A crypto SIP provides discipline rather than downside protection. Regular purchases can spread entry timing across different market conditions, but losses remain possible.
For Indian investors considering recurring Bitcoin or other crypto purchases, contribution size, investment horizon, platform costs and VDA taxation remain as important as the convenience of automation.
