CBI Calls Ayush Varshney ‘Technical Mastermind’ in GainBitcoin Scam, Granted Bail as Probe Widens
A big update has come in one of India’s largest crypto fraud cases. Ayush Varshney, a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, faced arrest at Mumbai airport in March 2026. Officials said he tried to leave the country during the ongoing GainBitcoin scam probe.
The Central Bureau of Investigation handled the arrest. The agency linked Varshney to the GainBitcoin scam, which caused losses of about $2.1 billion. Investigators called him the “technical mastermind” of the operation. They said he helped build the platform’s system and tools.
GainBitcoin started in 2015 and promised high returns through Bitcoin cloud mining. Many investors joined after hearing about steady monthly profits. The scheme also offered rewards for bringing new users. This created a chain where new money paid older investors.
Experts had doubts about such models early on. Gavin Andresen once warned that many cloud mining plans do not work as claimed. Later, those fears proved true as the scheme collapsed in 2017. Investors stopped receiving returns, and many lost their money.
Investigation and Legal Developments
Authorities believe the scam collected around 80,000 bitcoin. More than 100,000 people across India got affected. The case gained speed after action linked to the Supreme Court of India in 2023. Investigators raided many places and collected digital proof.
Varshney also co-founded a tech company called Darwin Labs. Officials said this company helped build parts of the GainBitcoin system. However, his legal team denied direct involvement in handling investor money. They said he only worked on the technical side.
A Delhi court granted bail to Varshney in April 2026. The court said no clear proof showed that he received money from investors. Even so, the case has not ended. The investigation continues as agencies search for more evidence.
Wider Impact and Global Context
The GainBitcoin scam also links to Amit Bhardwaj, who led the project. He is no longer alive. Authorities still try to track missing funds and other people involved.
This case also shows a larger trend. Some past Forbes 30 Under 30 names have faced fraud charges. These include Sam Bankman-Fried and Elizabeth Holmes. These cases have caused huge losses worldwide.
The GainBitcoin scam shows the risks in crypto investments. High return promises often hide bigger dangers. The case continues as investigators work to uncover the full truth.
