OpenAI is reportedly in preliminary discussions to acquire cybersecurity firm Trail of Bits, potentially strengthening its AI-driven vulnerability detection and software security capabilities.
According to The Information, negotiations remain at an early stage, with neither company confirming the discussions. The potential acquisition value remains undisclosed.
Founded in 2012, New York-based Trail of Bits employs more than 40 people and specializes in identifying security vulnerabilities across open-source software and blockchain infrastructure.
OpenAI and Trail of Bits Expand Security Collaboration
The companies previously partnered through the Patch the Planet initiative, launched in June 2026. The program combines OpenAI’s GPT-5.5-Cyber and Codex Security with human security researchers to identify vulnerabilities and develop software patches.
According to OpenAI, the initiative identified hundreds of security issues during its first week and merged dozens of patches.
Trail of Bits subsequently reported 37 merged patches across projects including Python, cURL, and Go. More than 30 open-source projects have participated.
Acquisition Could Strengthen Blockchain Security
Trail of Bits has conducted security assessments for major decentralized finance protocols, including Uniswap and Aave. Its expertise covers smart contracts, blockchain bridges, network infrastructure, and vulnerability remediation.
Acquiring the company could strengthen OpenAI’s ability to develop cybersecurity tools for financial institutions and cryptocurrency platforms. However, the discussions have not resulted in a confirmed transaction.
Internal Security Concerns Draw Attention
The reported negotiations follow separate controversies involving OpenAI employees. In October, three former safety researchers alleged they were dismissed after raising concerns about AI safety. OpenAI disputed those allegations, attributing the dismissals to violations involving sensitive information.
Separately, according to the US Department of Justice, engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested on October 13 over allegations involving a concealed recording device. OpenAI reported no evidence of unauthorized access to customer data, source code, or model weights.
Final Thoughts
A Trail of Bits acquisition could accelerate OpenAI’s cybersecurity expansion by combining automated vulnerability discovery with expert remediation. However, negotiations remain unconfirmed, and any agreement would require further discussions. The potential deal highlights growing demand for AI-assisted software security, particularly across financial and blockchain infrastructure, where vulnerabilities can cause substantial losses.
