The US Securities and Exchange Commission canceled its August 14 meeting on crypto rules. Commissioners planned to discuss new rules for crypto startups in Washington. The SEC cited an ‘unforeseen scheduling issue’ for canceling the meeting. The proposal could make fundraising easier for certain crypto companies.

An SEC spokesperson said the meeting would move to another date, according to Reuters. The spokesperson said it would move ‘due to an unforeseen scheduling issue.’ The SEC has not shared a new date for the meeting.

The planned rules could help crypto startups raise money under simpler requirements. The SEC also wants to explore safe harbor rules for some token projects.

The delay comes as the Senate pauses work on the CLARITY Act. The Senate left Washington without voting on the major crypto regulation bill. The next key vote could come after lawmakers return in September.

The CLARITY Act aims to create clearer rules for digital assets. Its delay adds more pressure on regulators to provide guidance for crypto companies.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins has pushed for simpler crypto rules since joining the agency. He has also supported safe harbor plans for token issuers and startups.

The SEC continues work on an innovation exemption for blockchain-based financial products. The plan could let companies test new digital asset products under clearer rules.

The agency has also changed its approach toward major crypto companies under President Donald Trump. The SEC dropped several crypto lawsuits and reversed earlier accounting guidance.

Friday’s cancellation does not end the crypto rule proposal. The SEC still needs to hold another meeting before starting the formal process.

For crypto startups, the delay means more waiting for clearer fundraising rules. The wider crypto market also faces uncertainty as US regulators and lawmakers move slowly.
