A Rogue Auto QR Code warning has spread online after a Mumbai Uber auto ride triggered multiple UPI registration alerts. On August 12, CNBC Awaaz journalist Ashish Chaturvedi reported the incident after his sister booked an Uber auto in Mumbai.

The driver reportedly showed a suspicious QR code, which she avoided and paid cash instead. Soon after, several banks sent UPI registration messages to her phone, raising concerns about a possible QR code scam.

Chaturvedi shared the incident on X and tagged Mumbai Traffic Police, Maharashtra Cyber, Cyber Dost, and Uber Support. He wrote, “My sister suspected this and paid in cash. However, after a few minutes, she started receiving many messages from different banks for UPI registration.”

The incident sparked claims about a new UPI fraud method that could secretly link bank accounts to another device. However, the viral explanation remains unconfirmed and may overstate the actual technical risk.

The main concern involves scammers obtaining a phone number and attempting UPI registration from their devices. Such attempts can trigger multiple alerts without proving that scammers gained control of bank accounts.

Fake QR codes remain a real UPI security risk. Scammers can replace genuine payment codes or trick users into making payments through false refund claims. A QR code also cannot make a user receive money by entering a UPI PIN.

Users should check the beneficiary name before approving every payment. Suspicious UPI registration alerts require immediate contact with the concerned bank. Cyber fraud complaints can also reach the national helpline at 1930.

The Mumbai incident highlights a simple warning. Unfamiliar QR codes deserve caution, especially during cash or digital payments with unknown drivers.
