JPMorgan Chase is moving closer to accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum as collateral for loans to institutional clients. The US banking giant plans to support these loans as demand for crypto grows across Wall Street.
The program targets institutions such as hedge funds and corporate treasuries, with third-party custodians holding the assets. Reports indicate the service could expand JPMorgan’s existing crypto lending efforts.
The move would let institutions borrow US dollars without selling their Bitcoin or Ethereum holdings. JPMorgan would use crypto values to set lending limits and manage market risks.
The bank plans strong safeguards since crypto prices can change sharply within short periods. Reports also point to third-party custody for pledged digital assets.
JPMorgan’s approach shows how crypto lending is entering traditional banking more deeply. The bank already uses Kinexys for blockchain payments, asset tokenization and faster settlement.
The shift also stands out against CEO Jamie Dimon’s long criticism of Bitcoin. Dimon has repeatedly questioned Bitcoin while JPMorgan has expanded its digital asset operations.
A JPMorgan-related crypto report described the move as a major step toward wider banking adoption. Crypto industry figures have also linked bank lending with stronger institutional demand.
The lending model still carries clear risks for borrowers. Falling Bitcoin or Ethereum prices can trigger margin calls and force additional collateral payments.
Retail investors also remain outside the reported program. The focus stays on large institutions with stronger balance sheets and established banking relationships.
The bigger question now involves other major banks. Goldman Sachs, Citi and other lenders could face pressure to develop similar crypto lending services.
JPMorgan’s Kinexys platform already supports blockchain-based financial services. Its official site describes Kinexys as a platform for ‘programmable payments, asset tokenization and near-real-time settlement.’
The development marks another step toward treating Bitcoin and Ethereum as financial assets. Wider bank adoption could make crypto-backed borrowing a larger part of global finance.
